Sudanese sheep — the complete buyer's guide for Saudi Arabia

Hamari sheep on green pasture

Types of Sudanese sheep

Most of Sudan's sheep are Sudanese desert sheep: long-legged, drooping-eared, with a long thin tail. Within them are local types named after the tribes or regions they are linked to.

Three Hamari sheep on green grass

Hamari (red)

Named after the lands of the Hamar tribe in West Kordofan. Usually red or reddish-brown, often with a lighter head. One of the best-known types and much in demand in Gulf markets.

Kabashi

Linked to the Kababish tribe of North Kordofan. Generally known for a large frame and hardiness in desert conditions; colour ranges from white to light brown and mixed.

White and pied

Besides red, white and pied sheep are common. Colour alone does not decide quality: live weight, age and health matter more than the trade name.

Weights and carcass yield

A sheep usually gives a carcass of about 45–50% of its live weight. The table estimates the carcass for each live weight:

25 kg11.25 kg12.5 kg
30 kg13.5 kg15 kg
35 kg15.75 kg17.5 kg

Age and weight vary by batch; every batch states its age, live weight and the date it was weighed. See also Sudanese sheep carcass yield.

Sudanese sheep prices in Saudi Arabia

There is no single price: it depends on live weight, season and quantity, and demand rises before Eid al-Adha. Always compare the price per live kg.

MIDRAR's current price: SAR 750 per head at about 25 kg live (about SAR 30 per live kg). The price excludes shipping; shipping from Port Sudan to Jeddah Islamic Port is SAR 200 per head, about SAR 950 per head landed in Jeddah.

Why Sudanese sheep are popular in Saudi Arabia

  • Leaner meat: suits mandi, kabsa and anyone who wants less fat.
  • Usually cheaper than local fat-tailed breeds, and available in volume.
  • Heat-adapted, used to little water and long walks on open range.
  • Valid for Eid sacrifice when it meets the age and soundness conditions, like any sheep.
